Mountain Biking

Hanmer Springs is becoming one of the premier locations for mountain biking in New Zealand. Thanks to extensive access permitted by Matariki forestry and the hard work of the Hanmer mountain bike club and other volenteers we now have a large network of tracks.

As with the walking there is a choice of the nice flat heritage forest network or the tracks heading up the hills surrounding Hanmer for those with a bit more puff.

Hanmer Springs also hosts a number of big mountain biking events including the Rainbow rage, 12 hour race and Molesworth muster, see the Events page for more information.

Riding Code
Most of the tracks for walking and mountain biking are seperate, although some are shared. Always be aware of other track users moving slower or coming the other way. Do not use the walking only tracks as this will mess them up for others, there is plenty of mountain bike tracks.
Be considerate when using tracks during or after high rain fall as this is when most track damage occurs. Take your rubbish home with you.

This shows the tracks that are currently open/closed, a map containing the tracks and where to find is available from the HanmerNZ office for $3 which goes to maintaining the tracks.
